o choose a place that is close to the main structure so that you can easily run an electrical line for providing heat to the pen

o invest in proper insulation and put 1.5 inches of Styrofoam sheets between the walls and ceiling as well
- Just as you ensure insulation of the chicken pen you have to apply your mind to ventilation. Fumes can build up to toxic levels if the chicken coop is not properly ventilated. You can ensure adequate airflow by placing vents on the south or east side of the pen. Also drill holes on the other two sides of the pen where the walls meet the roof. Make sure that you cover these holes and other windows with mesh screens.
- Before you actually decide to build a chicken pen check whether a mobile chicken coop would do instead. Mobile chicken coops are a better option if you have less chicken or are in a position where you have to move chicken often.
- Make sure that the chicken pen gets sufficient sun during daytime. In extremely hot climates you may plant tall plants outside the chicken pen ensuring that you do not block the ventilation that you have provided.
